Trinity Baseball Season in Swing

By: Noah Polesky

At first glance, the 2015 edition of Holy Trinity Titans' baseball may just seem like a bunch of grade elevens, a couple grade tens and a handful of grade nines. Then again, it’s hard not to have a prejudice against a team that folded last year and doesn’t look like it’s going to be a contender anytime soon. But, upon further inspection, it is easy to see depth on the mound, on the field, at the plate, as well as behind it.

for those who haven’t seen a team roster yet, here it is:

  • Arthur, Chad
  • Bowman, Brian
  • Dera, Zach
  • Evelyn, Remington
  • Hospital, Steven
  • Longhurst, Kevin
  • MacDowell, Matthew
  • Ohorodnyk, Alex
  • Opar, Andrew
  • Pereira, Logan
  • Polesky, Noah
  • Surmanski, Christian
  • Vannier, Evan
  • Walker, Spencer
The infield is easy enough to predict with Andrew Opar and Brian Bowman taking most of the time at first base, Chad Arthur providing the defence at the hot corner and maybe a platoon at first, and Remington Evelyn standing in at shortstop. One question mark for the Titans this season may be second base with names such as Logan Pereira or Christian Surmanski taking turns there. The outfield will be a fairly deep position for Coach Bertin and Coach De Rubeis to fill in with names like Matt MacDowell, and Alex Ohorodnyk playing the corners and Kevin Longhurst and Steven Hospital splitting the duties in centre field. Standing in behind the plate will be Zach Dera for most games, backed up by Noah Polesky. Dera has a strong glove hand and an even stronger arm making the running game almost a non-factor for the opposition. Probably the largest issue for the Titans this season will be on the mound, the rotation and bullpen will highlight names such as Longhurst, Bowman, Hospital, Walker, and Vannier.

In the team’s first exhibition game none of the pitchers pitched more than one inning, all of them starting strong then allowing a couple of walks and having to be lifted from the game. On the other side of the ball, the Titans have a good mix of power and contact hitters and lots of hitters that can get the job done. Players like Remington Evelyn, Matt MacDowell, Steven Hospital, Noah Polesky and Kevin Longhurst will be expected to get on base and set the table for the power hitters such as Zach Dera, Brian Bowman and Andrew Opar.

For the Titans to succeed this season they will need their pitching staff to be consistent and their starters to go deep into ballgames to put their small bullpen under the least amount of stress possible. They will need their table setters to get on base for the big bats in the heart of the order, they will need to manufacture runs, play a little small ball, steal some bases, and most of all: they will need their defence to stay strong and make the routine plays that are hit to them.

Stay tuned for details, stats, and scores, and as always GO TITANS!!!
