This week at Holy Trinity, along with all other Catholic schools across the province, we are celebrating Catholic Education Week. I had the chance to sit down with everyone's favourite school chaplain, Mrs. Harkin, in order to find out more about this special part of the school year.
TTT: What is Catholic Education Week?
KH: Catholic Education Week begins on Sunday May 3, 2015 to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, schools and parishes reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society.
TTT: Why do we have it/celebrate it?
KH: Each year, approximately 600,000 students in 1,500 Catholic schools across the province mark Catholic Education Week with events and activities that both celebrate and deepen our faith. Catholic education is an enduring tradition in Ontario, stretching back over one hundred and seventy years. We are proud of our successful Catholic school system. Catholic school graduates have gone on to found Ontario Catholic universities, establish Catholic hospitals, as well as Catholic social service agencies in Ontario. The legacy of Ontario Catholicism is that we are a community drawn from all parts of the world. We have drawn on the best secular traditions of academic achievement and combined these with a deep moral purpose rooted in our Catholic doctrine and social teaching. Catholic Education Week is an ideal opportunity for all of us to celebrate the many successes of Catholic education. Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at all grade levels, including prayer celebrations and service activities.
TTT: What is this year's theme(s)?
KH: Exploring Paths of Joy
There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:
- Monday – Walking Together and Sharing Our Stories
- Tuesday – Opening the Scriptures
- Wednesday – Welcoming Others to the Table
- Thursday – Recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread
- Friday – Proclaiming the Good News
KH: Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our own school developed activities we prepare a series of activities which will highlight how our school is ‘Exploring Paths of Joy’.
TTT: How are we celebrating at HT?
KH: Music Monday, Mental Health and Wellbeing assembly, Wednesday music trip, Walk with Jesus Rally, Dr. Simone’s Warehouse “day of service” and the Good Shepherd Society “day of service”.
TTT: How can the individual get involved in C.E.W.?
KH: The school has been announcing the various activities and has encouraged student involvement.
Enjoy the rest of Catholic education week, Titans!
