Titans Plant the Marian Garden

By: Izabela Pitula

On Tuesday, May 19th, a few members of HT’s Social Justice Club paid a visit to the Legionaries of Christ house to plant beautiful flowers, bushes and small trees around the statue of Mary.

Eight girls, along with Mrs. Harkin as their supervisor, participated in this fun activity after school. Before we got our hands dirty, we energized ourselves by some snacks provided by the teacher. After that we had our hands full with the task.

At first we planned out how and where to set up the new plants and later we began to dig in the soil. The ground was hard as clay, but with some muscles, tools and the help of Brother Nathan, we got the job done.

Even though we ran out of time to finish planting the whole garden, we planted few flowers as well as two little bushes on each side. On the right side, the bush will be called “Saint Anne” to represent the mother of Mary. On the left side, the bush will be called “Joachim” to symbolize the father of Mary.

During a short break, Kristyn Farrell and myself had a chance to talk to one of the priests, Father Michael, living in the Legionaries of Christ house. Father Michael has been a priest of 15 years and counting. He is from Toronto, but lives usually in Germany during his missionary visits.

Here is the full interview with the Father:

TTT: Tell us a bit about the Legionaries of Christ and its role in the community.
FM: The Legionaries of Christ try to help Catholics and Christians to have a better relationship with God as well as improve their faith and increase their involvement in the community. Here in Oakville, we lead many clubs for the youth to let them know that Catholicism isn’t boring. It’s all about learning about your faith and having fun doing so.

TTT: What is the purpose and the importance of the Marian Garden?
FM: The importance of this garden is to bring people closer to God and Mother Mary. It is like a new chapter of their life where they come in to pray and seek guidance and support in difficult times.

TTT: How will the garden be used as part of the Legionary of Christ?
FM: May is the month devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary therefore we come here every day and pray the rosary in Her name. We thank her for all that she has done for us and continue to seek forgiveness and guidance over ourselves, our families, friends, neighbours and the world.

The reason of why the Social Justice League from Holy Trinity visited the house of the Legionaries of Christ was because we wanted to enlighten the garden and give it an extra sparkle for people to see when they come there to pray to Mary both in times of despair and in hopes of peace and justice.
