Valentine's Day Movie Night

By: Carolyn Martinko & Kristyn Farrell

Valentine’s Day is coming up quickly, and whether you plan to spend time with friends, family, your significant other, or on your own, make sure to check out some of these great romantic comedies.

  1. Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011): Featuring an intricately woven plot and an amazing, hilarious, and dynamic cast including Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, and Julianne Moore, Crazy, Stupid, Love. is an absolute must-see. This movie is arguably one of the best, if not the best, romcom in existence. Filled with surprises, laughter, tears, and plot twists around every corner, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. Along with the characters, as they face ups and downs through all the challenging (yet comical) events they encounter, you will truly experience a roller coaster of emotions. This film is both hilarious and heartwarming, and I guarantee you will totally love it.
  2. Valentine’s Day (2010): This story traces over a dozen individuals’ lives in Los Angeles on February 14th. Couples (and a few bitter singles) struggle to make it through the day – and while some end it successfully, others are not so lucky. Comedy and romance are perfect partners in this film, which has tons of recognizable stars such as Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Garner, Patrick Dempsey, Anne Hathaway, and even Taylor Swift. Fit for all ages, Valentine’s Day is a great film choice for its namesake holiday.
  3. The F Word (2014): Set in Toronto, The F Word follows the story of Wallace and Chantry (played by Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, respectively), two individuals who have immediate chemistry – but one of which is already in a relationship. As the two grow closer and quickly become best friends, the question arises: will deeper feelings always get in the way? Filled with quirky (and laugh-out-loud) comedy, this wonderful film is great to watch with friends or for a date.
  4. Life As We Know It (2010): When life throws something completely unexpected at you, your first instinct is probably to turn and run. Sure, we all know the famous saying “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” But when life gives you unexpected parenthood… what do you do? For Holly and Eric, the news comes when they find out, after the sudden and tragic death of their close friends Alison and Peter, that their friends’ daughter Sophie has been left in their care. Life As We Know It tells the story of how two people with completely opposite personalities, who have had mutual feelings of dislike for each other ever since they met, come together to raise a child and learn how to get along. Starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, this is a fun, quirky, and upbeat romcom that you won’t want to miss!
  5. Pride and Prejudice (2005): Based on the novel by Jane Austen, this film is set in early-1800s England and follows the story of spirited Miss Elizabeth Bennet and proud Mr. Darcy. Though this movie does not fall perfectly into the romantic comedy genre, it is a beautifully dramatic story of romance and, of course, the struggle to overcome pride and prejudice. Why not try something new? An enchanting soundtrack, captivating storyline, and lovable protagonist will leave you pleasantly surprised this Valentine’s Day.
  6. Leap Year (2010): If your house was on fire and you had sixty seconds to grab something before leaving, what would you take with you? What do you value the most? The movie Leap Year tells the story of Anna, Declan, and Louis (a lovely suitcase) as they embark on a trek across Ireland to find Anna’s boyfriend so that she can propose to him. According to Irish tradition, a woman can only do so on February 29th, which only comes around once every four years. Along the expedition, as Anna and Jeremy journey through the country, they discover a whole lot more than what they set out to find. This is a cute romcom that you will absolutely love, starring Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, and Adam Scott.
  7. Something Borrowed (2011): Rachel and Darcy have been best friends for ever – but when Rachel falls for Darcy’s fiancé, things become complicated. Based on the novel by Emily Griffith, this story asks viewers – is it wrong to put your own love ahead of someone else’s? This is a story about the classic “good girl” trying to decide if she will fight for what she wants at the risk of losing her best friend. Filled with romance, drama, and bursts of comedy, this movie will not leave you disappointed.
