Thursdays at the Theatre: Vol. 1

By: Joshua Volkers

Hello, Titans! Today marks the first day for a bi-monthly article on movies, the ones that have recently come out, are coming out, and then we’ll be taking a quick look at a film from the past as a bit of a ‘Throwback Thursday’ element. After all, you’ll have the entire four-day weekend to have the opportunity to check out some of the films that I’m going to list here.

Starting off with what has been released over the past few weeks, I should say that January was always a slow month when it came to good movies, seeing as it’s at the beginning of the year and it’s where studios like to dump films they have little faith in quality-wise so that people forget about them soon. Don’t believe me? Look at this: The Woman in Black 2 releases on the first weekend of the year, everybody hated it; Taken 3, (or Tak3n) comes out, viewed as a heap of disappointment; and I could list several others, but you get the picture. There were a few good ones, more than usual, such as Paddington, Project Almanac, and the Oscar-nominated films that were in limited release last year which went into wide release in January as they always do, so there’s that.

Going into February, I have to mention that Seventh Son and Jupiter Ascending are not recommended (they flopped money-wise, too), but if you’re looking for inane kid humour with enough entertainment for the older folks, that new Spongebob film is perfect for the whole family. And, seeing as how this week the only major releases are R-rated… I’ll just advise you not to pay more than 50 dollars on your movie night out. That bad pun is all I’ll say on the matter. Jumping into next week there are two films coming out that deal with social issues. One is a seemingly by-the-numbers but possibly cute movie called The DUFF, which is about stereotypes and bullying. The other, McFarland, USA, is based on a true story and stars Kevin Costner as a coach who’s transferred to a primarily Latino school, and sees the potential for an unlikely team to become great cross-country runners.

Gee, that went by fast! Fortunately, we’ll have less to cover in a couple of weeks, but before that, it’s time to talk about this week’s throwback film, and that is The Princess Bride! Seeing as it’s Valentine’s Day this week, I could have gone with the more obvious choice of Casablanca, but I’m choosing this movie because it’s awesome, and I don’t think enough people have seen it. It’s fun and relatable, has romance, adventure, revenge, “You killed my father, PREPARE TO DIE!!!”, and so much other great stuff. It’s a classic, so go watch it, and enjoy your Valentine’s Day. Or just view it as a Hallmark holiday, your choice.

As the first in a bi-monthly article, I feel this went rather well, but if you have any advice or just want to comment on what I’ve discussed and recommended, feel free to leave a comment for us to take into consideration. Until the 26th, I bid you farewell, Titans. Goodbye!
