On Friday, HT participated in our own Earth Hour, an initiative sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund. All around the school, all unnecessary lights were turned off and staff minimized electrical usage in classrooms around the school as way to raise awareness of power usage. All around us, we are plugged in one way or another, whether it’s our cellphones, our dishwashers, or the smart boards in the classrooms. Electricity is a vital aspect of everyone’s lives, however, it’s hard to remember how detrimental it can be. With the popular use of non-renewable energy resources and the exponentially growing need for power, there is no question that people need to reflect on how they use electricity.

The initiative originally started in 2007 but over the past 8 years it has grown into a global event. Over 7000 cities in 162 countries participate. It went dark in places from all corners of the globe, from places like the Coliseum in Rome, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and even the International Space Station.

The global Earth Hour is on Saturday March 28th, 2015 from 8:30-9:30. HT Environmental encourages everyone to participate in their own homes by turning off all their lights and electronics!
