The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton has captured the attention of countless readers with its insights into the true meaning of heroism. The novel follows the story of Ponyboy, a young teen who relies on his brothers to watch out for him on the streets of Oklahoma in the mid-1960s. Ponyboy and his fellow gang of “greasers” face the challenge of keeping their ground against the Socs – a gang of kids from the rich part of town. Everything seems under control, until one night things go too far.

The Outsiders is a story of finding a place to belong, and of understanding friendship in a harsh world. Ponyboy’s tale shows the consequences that arise from taking violence to the extreme, and the risk of losing the people you love. The Outsiders remains a critically acclaimed novel after many years, and is recommended to anyone looking for a story of heroism, rivalry, friendship, and belonging.
